Central Kuskokwim meets wolf control limits
Alaska's Department of Fish and Game has closed the central Kuskokwim River area to shooting wolves from planes. Officials say the wolf population in the area has been cut to the appropriate number. Fish and Game officials say they had wanted between 40 and 53 wolves left in the area.
Surveys in January and March found about 120 wolves in the area. Officials say hunters and trappers have killed more than 60 wolves since then.
Other areas where wolves are still being hunted by plane are near McGrath, Tok, the Nelchina Basin and a large swath of land across Cook Inlet, west of Anchorage.
